I have to admit, I have a hard time committing… When it comes to perfume that is. I love to wear new scents all the time, and the type of scent that interests me varies greatly depending not only on where I’m going, but also what kind of mood I happen to be in that day.
I was really excited when I recently stumbled across Scent Trunk and learned that I could have 3 different samples of Indie and niche perfumes from across the globe shipped to my door monthly. Perfect for a commitment-phobe like me who loves to try new things all the time! My husband, Paul, is always looking for something new to wear as well. And Scent Trunk offers Men’s, Women’s and Gender Neutral subscription options; so there’s definitely something for everyone.
Each box of samples is hand-picked for a subscriber based on the notes that they express a preference for when setting up their profile. For myself I selected fresh and floral, and for Paul I chose fresh and woodsy.
You can go back to your profile at any time to adjust your preferences based on what you loved and what you didn’t in previous samples. And if you do happen to fall in love with one scent in particular, you won’t have to search the world to find it! Scent Trunk also has an online store where they sell full sized bottles of the products offered in their sampling service.

Although our boxes were packaged separately they both arrived at the same time, and it was really fun to get something in the mail together!
We first opened the men’s box and were impressed with the way that it was packaged. The box came with 3 fairly large sample bottles tucked inside a velvety drawstring pouch, a price list for the full sized versions of the samples, and card for each one that gave a description, the top, middle, and base notes contained in it, the longevity, and also the sillage (the distance in which it lingers in the air). Both of us loved two of the three samples from the first sniff, and it was great being able to reference the cards to decipher which notes it was that we found enjoyable and which made the third scent unpleasant to us. As we put the box away Paul expressed to me that he was really surprised by how much he liked the perfumes that he was given and asked how much a monthly subscription costs. At $18 a month he thinks it’s a great deal considering the generous size of the samples, and he loves the idea of getting something new each month.
The women’s box is packaged much the same way as the men’s, with the only difference being the color of the box. Already knowing that I am difficult to please when it comes to scent on any given day, I was not surprised that on that first day I only loved one of the scents that were chosen for me, Wild Rose by Thorn and Bloom. I wore it for a couple of days and then decided to give the others another chance because I was in the mood for something different. One of the other samples, Object Celeste by Volnay, was just the right fit for how I was feeling that day and has temporarily become my new favourite. I’m still not in love with Miyako by Auphorie because it has more of a woodsy aroma than I prefer, but I love having a variety of choices. It wouldn’t surprise me if one day soon I find just the right occasion to wear it.
If you love the idea of getting someone perfume as a gift, but are scared to choose the wrong one, this service makes a great option! Gift subscriptions are $54 for 3 months, $96 for 6 months ($12 in savings) and $180 for 12 months ($36 savings = 2 free boxes!)
