We are excited to announce that Goh Ballet’s critically acclaimed production of the beloved holiday classic, The Nutcracker, will return to Vancouver for it’s seventh year.

Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker  will feature performances by both local and international professionals, including Principal Dancers from the San Francisco Ballet as well as the Pacific Northwest Ballet, with choreography by the iconic Anna-Marie Holmes. Musical accompaniment for these world-class performances will be performed by members of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, led by the incomparable Leslie Dala, with lighting design by Canadian Pierre Lavoie.

Goh Ballet is delighted to announce that Leslie Dala returns as conductor in this year’s production of Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker.

Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker is a magical production in every sense of the word. My experience is quite different when I conduct for the ballet because there is that very important element of the dancer’s needs to contend with. Not only am I the one who leads the orchestra but I must also make sure that the musical accents and phrasing match that of the dancers, enabling them to – personify the music.” said Dala. “To return to this amazing production and work with world-calibre musicians and dancers is always an experience that I find artistically fulfilling.”

This piece is a traditional rendition of E.T.A Hoffman’s fairy tale “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”, and takes guests on a delightful adventure as main character Clara’s dream of her new wooden Nutcracker comes to life. When giant mice attack Clara, her brave Nutcracker and his army of life-sized toy soldiers come to her rescue. The Mouse King corners the Nutcracker and a one-on-one battle ensues. After the defeat of the Mouse King, the Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome prince, and whisks Clara away on a journey into the Land of Snow. There they meet enchanting characters such as the Snow Queen and Snow King. The Nutcracker then takes Clara across the Lemonade Sea to the Kingdom of Sweets, where they are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy. A feast is held in Clara’s honour and many dances from around the world are performed to entertain her. Clara is then awakened by her mother, and left to wonder if her grand adventure was only a dream.
