I was lucky enough to receive the opportunity to check out Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker performance Wednesday evening. The first thing that immediately captured my attention was the stunning backdrop and props that really brought the story to life. The stunning backdrops were full of colour and imagination that really threw me into the story. My favourite of the props was the Christmas tree that grew larger as Clara and the Nutcracker shrunk giving the illusion of them actually shrinking. The props, background scenery and the absolutely enchanting dancing made this performance a 10! The costumes were very elaborate and gorgeous which added that extra umph to this performance. Meng Fan Shen as the Harlequin was the most amazing dancer I had ever seen. He was able to move around as a puppet would on strings all while still maintaining the grace of a ballet dancer. I really enjoyed the children in the performance, not only were they adorable as can be, they were very talented as well! It was really nice that the audience was able to participate in the show by clapping along to the beat of the music while the Peppermints danced a Russian dance.
The show was the perfect length, not too long and not too short and I was captivated every minute of it. I strongly recommend making Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker part of your family Christmas tradition. I did not bring my children along to the show but I think they will very much enjoy this performance when I take them next year. I would think the most ideal age to bring your children, so that they could appreciate such a fine show would be age 9 and up. I am still in awe at what a tremendous performance this was and how gracious I am for this opportunity to watch The Nutcracker. Upcoming shows started December 17 and continue until December 22.
