Heart of Our Nation
Earlier this month, The Royal Canadian Mint Released the 2017 $3 Fine Silver Coin – Heart of Our Nation; a souvenir to commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary. The 99.99% pure silver coin was designed by accomplished artist and coin designer, Laurie McGaw, of Guelph, Ontario.
The back side of the collectible coin boasts a large maple leaf surrounded by a collage of Canadian symbols – from native animals to maple syrup, several landmarks, and a few things in between.
While at first glance it may appear that the items are just randomly squeezed into the design, the symbols are actually cleverly placed – north, east, south, or west – to align with about where you would find them on a map of Canada.
“The Mint has a proud tradition of celebrating Canadian heritage through coins and we are excited to add to the celebration of Canada 150 through an extensive coin program that meets the needs of all collectors,” said Sandra Hanington, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. “The new Heart of our Nation collector coin is an opportunity to give Canadians of all ages a way to hold onto their special memories of Canada 150, as well as experience the joy of coin collecting.”

Clockwise from the top you’ll find: two hockey sticks and a puck, snowflakes, a polar bear, an inukshuk, Parliament Hill, the Canadian flag, a bottle of maple syrup, a lighthouse, lobster traps, a toboggan, a Canada goose, canoe, a beaver, a moose, black spruce trees, a Beaver plane, a salmon, wheat, one cowboy boot, and mountains.
“The Government of Canada is delighted that the Royal Canadian Mint is adding to the celebration of Flag Day 2017 with the launch of a new Canada 150-themed silver coin that honours the Canadian flag and many other icons that connect us all to Canada,” said the Honourable Melanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage. “As Canada 150 brings Canadians together in a year-long celebration, the Mint’s Heart of our Nation collector coin is an uplifting and precious way to be reminded of the many ways we love our country.”
Canada 150 Collection
The Royal Canadian Mint will issue over 40 different products to commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. While some products have already been released, many more will be announced throughout the year.
“Every coin crafted by the Royal Canadian Mint is a celebration of our Canadian identity, our collective pride and our most cherished moments, which we are delighted to capture with our new Canada 150 coin program,” said Sandra Hanington, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. “Canada 150 is a once-in-a-generation experience that will give each of us lasting memories and the Mint is proud to offer Canadians a unique way to preserve those memories through the joy of collecting our new coins.”
