Hello Humpback! A board book designed by BC First Nations artist and writer duo

New in Canadian Kid Lit

Yesterday I had the pleasure of receiving a copy of the newly released book, Hello Humpback!, for review. My five year old daughter and I had a great time flipping through the brightly illustrated pages. We couldn’t help but run our fingers across images that eye-catchingly combine a matte finish with glossy detailing.

About Hello Humpback!

It’s a BC-designed board book that teaches babies and toddlers some of their first words about nature on the West Coast of Canada.

The sturdy little book, featuring words by  storyteller Robert Budd, and the words and vibrant illustrations of award-winning First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers, is the first in a new children’s series.

Through its pages, little ones can explore the ecosystems and wildlife of British Columbia and become familiarized with the traditional imagery used in Indigenous art to represent animals – like salmon, bears, and orcas – that are iconic to BC.

Recommended ages

The book is recommended for ages 2-6, but I think it would make for a great read – and would be tactilely interesting for babies to explore – as well!

About the authors

Roy Henry Vickers is an artist, designer, and well-respected leader in First Nations communities, who has lived on the northwest coast of BC his entire life. He is a recipient of the Order of British Columbia, the Order of Canada, a Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal and an Honourary Doctorate of Letters from York University.

Robert Budd is an author with an Master of Arts degree in history, who has digitized many high-profile oral history collections including that of the Nisga’a First Nation. One of his books, Voices of British Columbia, was shortlisted for the 2011 Bill Duthie Booksellers’ Choice Award. He currently lives on Vancouver Island, in British Columbia.
