How To Clean Grout On Kitchen Counter Tops

We have been living in our house for a year now and if there is one thing that I could change in our house it would be the kitchen countertops.

Our countertops are tile, I had never seen something like this before and at the time thought it was really nice. But after living here for a year I have a few things I am not loving about them. One is that they are rough around the edges. So when I am working in the kitchen and leaning against the counter my shirt will get caught and will get tiny little holes. And the other is the grout, no matter what I do it always looks dirty.

Our grout before… scary right!

Since we know that we have a small kitchen reno we would like to tackle in the next year or two which will involve us replacing the countertops, I needed to find a solution.

Since I prepare food on my counter I wasn’t feeling too comfortable with using bleach which I know would have been a quick solution. After some trial and error and a lot of time on Goggle and YouTube, I finally found something that works!

And the best thing about this cleaner is that it is all natural and cost me less than $5 for all the supplies that I need.

What you will need:
  • Baking Soda ($1.25)
  • Lemons ($.64 each)
  • Grout Brush ($1.50 at hardware store)
  • Cloth
  • Water
  1. Sprinkle baking soda on the grout.

  2. Squeeze lemon juice on baking soda to moisten.

  3. Take your grout brush and use some elbow grease to scrub away on the dirt and build up.

  4. Wipe away residue. Be sure to get all the baking soda or you will be left with a gritty surface.

After some serious elbow grease, my kitchen countertops are now something that I can live with.

I hope that this simple cleaning solution worked as well for you as it did for me.

Happy cleaning!
