Quebecois author Louise Courey Nadeau is on a mission to inspire children to believe in themselves, and to use love and positivity to overcome any difficult times they may face.
In the first book, Magelica’s Voyage, we are introduced to green-haired Magelica, who has no idea where she came from or who her parents are. One evening during a storm, Magelica loses the feather necklace that is the only connection she has to her past. A strange and silly magical creature with spinning eyes comes to return it to her, and whisks Magelica and her pet dragon away to an adventure on the Isle of Dreams in a flying bathtub.
Both my seven year old daughter and I were instantly engaged when we started to read this beautifully written story filled with unexpected and whimsical characters. Elegantly weaved throughout this magical tale are lessons in perseverence, humility, empathy and love. Though Magelica is still unable to learn of her origins by the end of the book, she finds a confidence in herself that she did not have before. The feather necklace plays an important role throughout the story and in the end becomes a charm to keep Magelica connected to the magical new land that she has discovered. My daughter was very excited to have our own feather necklaces to wear, so that we can have a special connection too.
In book two, Magelica’s Voyage The Rescue, the story begins with a dream of the lost prince and his golderon stranded on a island covered with an eerie fog. Magelica awakens, sure that what she has seen in her dream was a reality, and rushes to the Isle of Lost Dreams in her flying tub to help. When she begins to tell the queen there what she has seen she falters, feeling doubt in herself, but the Queen reminds her to trust the voice inside of her. This story further reinforces the lesson to believe in yourself, and gives examples of how laughter and positivity can be contagious, and help to carry us together through sad and challenging times. By trusting her instincts and focusing on the small happy moments, her fears subside and she is able to help rescue the prince.
At the end of both stories the author briefly goes over the lessons that they contain, and prompts children to reflect on how they can use those lessons to create positive change in their own lives.
“Is there something you have been able to do because you really believed? Or is there something you want to do now? Go for it! Believe that you can do it, don’t give up and see what happens. You have more power than you may think!” – Magelica’s Voyage, Book 1
