Last night my husband and I had the pleasure of seeing ONCE, the romantic musical set in a gentler version of modern-day Dublin. If you arrive early you can head up onto the stage which is designed to be a modern-day Dublin pub and grab yourself a drink before the show begins. Much to my surprise the cast of actor-musicians were already up there and as many were still waiting to order their drinks much like being in a pub the show began with strumming and fiddling and singing Irish toe-tappers.
This simple story is based on the motion picture written and directed by John Carney about two strangers (known only as Guy and Girl) that meet on the streets of Dublin. He is a busking singer/songwriter, Hoover repairman that is heartbroken and missing his ex that ran off to New York and she is a Czech immigrant with a broken Hoover who connects with his music and offers him advice. Over the course of one fateful week, their unexpected friendship and collaboration evolves into a powerful but complicated romance, heightened by the raw emotion of the songs they have created together.
I have never seen something quite like ONCE before, I found it to be emotionally captivating and theatrically just breathtaking, it drew me in from the very first note and never let me go. It is not your typical love story where the guy gets the girl, so if you have ever loved and lost I think you truly owe it to yourself to see this show. It’s an unforgettable story about going after your dreams and the power of music that connects us all.
This show will be in Vancouver from November 17 – 22 and you can still purchase tickets online via Ticketmaster.
