As we continue our excitement around Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) and Summer 2019, I am excited to share something from our next guest contributor this week, Angela Jimenez, who attended “Newsies” with her two daughter’s last night.
“Newsies” at Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) in Vancouver’s Stanley Park is a must-see! My two daughters and I have been looking forward to seeing this summer’s shows and “Newsies” was worth the wait! Going to TUTS has become a tradition for our family that means “summer is here in Vancouver!” This will be our third year coming to see TUTS and in my 12 year old daughter’s words, “it was thrilling!”
Thrilling is a perfect word to describe a show that pleases the senses! I found myself literally bouncing, humming, and wanting to sing with the song and dance numbers, especially “Seize the Day”! The three of us were engaged the entire time as the cast are highly talented actors, singers, and dancers. They are the complete package. We felt lucky to be seeing such a professional show here in such a beautiful setting. In fact, the setting couldn’t have been more endearing. I actually saw an eagle fly over us and perch himself at a tree and watch the show. While I saw an eagle, my daughter saw two owls fly by! What other theatre can boast this?
Favourite songs were definitely “Carrying the Banner”, “King of New York”, and “Seize the Day”, although every song was amazing. The choreography has to be noted and given huge accolades.
We were worried about the weather, but we lucked out and it did not rain. We brought our warm jackets and were fine. The only thing I can suggest, which we forgot, was some bug spray. However, this is a very minor thing.
I was really happy to have shared this play with my 10 and 12 year old daughters. The messages are thought-provoking and still very current today. “The things we do will be tomorrow’s news.” The connections to your own life and current events are powerful: morals, workers’ rights, standing up for what is right, and never giving up. Children DO have power, and I love that message for my daughters. In fact, what an inspiring message for us all. We have the power to make positive change.
