Thrifty Thursday - DIY Peppermint Bath Salts

It is the time of year that everyone is running around in a craze trying to get ready for the holiday season. Very few will take the time to just sit back and relax and try to enjoy the magic that is the Christmas season. Each year I get caught up in the craziness and miss far too much. But, this year I am going to try my best to slow down and enjoy the holiday season.

One way I am going to slow down this year is by making an effort to have baths. Everyone needs time to relax and what better way than in the bath. So I have tried my hand at making homemade bath salts. A basic bath salt recipe is actually pretty simple; 4 parts Epsom salt to 1 part baking soda.

As someone who suffers from anxiety, I was looking for something that was going to ease that. By adding peppermint essential oil it gives you bath salts a cooling sensation and has a calming effect on the body. Peppermint also helps to relieve sore muscles or headaches, improves mental focus, helps with joint pain and boosts your energy.

One of the things that I am loving out these bath salts is that they are very easy on the pocket book. I was able to make 6 jars for just around $10.

Not only are these great for home use but perfect for your gift giving needs. This year we will be giving a set to each of the boy’s teachers because goodness knows they will need to relax. For a little extra pampering or for gift giving purposes you could colour your salts and make a layering effect, add ribbon or a matching muffin liner.

What you will need:
  • 250ml Mason Jars
  • 2 cups of Epsom Salts
  • 1/2 cup of baking soda
  • 10 drops of peppermint essential oil
  • Wilton’s gel food coloring *optional*
  • In a bowl mix Epsom Salt, baking soda and peppermint oil together. You will notice it can get a little clumpy in parts but just keep stirring and it will work itself out.
  • Pour into Mason jars and seal tight.
  • Use 1/4 to 1/2 cup per bath
