My daughter lost her fourth tooth last week!
This time around I dodged the usual dilemma – trying to discern a fair price for one little tooth. Not because I’ve finally got it all figured out or anything, but because my sweet girl actually LOST her tooth.
Apparently she took it to the washroom to brush it at some point. She was sure she put it back. But alas, it was gone. And I was left with more questions like, “Why can’t you be that enthusiastic about brushing them when they’re in your mouth?!” than answers.
But I digress.
You’re probably wondering why, since she’s already lost 3 teeth previously, this is still a dilemma for me.
The truth is, every tooth she’s lost so far has ended up with a different dollar value attached.
I thought I had it all figured out. A sure-fire plan was set in place when the first milk tooth loosened itself ever so slightly from my daughter’s gums. The tooth fairy would give five dollars for the first tooth since it’s such a momentous occasion – Yay! – and two dollars after that.
This plan quickly unravelled when the over-tired fairy forgot to make an appearance to claim the third little treasure before going bed. She had to make a quick dash into the bedroom during breakfast to leave an
excuse heartfelt note explaining that she hadn’t forgotten but was in fact running behind on her nightly duties, and had had to quickly hide in the closet because little sister walked into the room and woke everyone up just as she was about to make the swap.
That tooth cost me ten dollars.
Was it unfair of me not to give any money for last tooth – the lost tooth? I’d like to think not.
I want to teach my girls that there are consequences to being careless. Besides that, to be perfectly honest, my daughter didn’t seem particularly bothered by the whole thing; so I didn’t have to give it much thought. Problem solved!
And now, as I sit and watch my little girl poke at wiggly tooth number 5, I can’t help but wonder…
What is the tooth fairy’s going rate these days anyways?
And who else out there has forgotten to swap a tooth for cash? I can’t be the only one! How did you handle it?
