Summer camp isn’t just for the kids anymore.

Are some of your fondest summer memories those of nights bunking at camp after busy days filled with outdoor adventure and games, escaping the city or suburbs, and making new friends? Or maybe, like me, you just listened in awe at the camp tales your friends returned to school with each fall, but never had the chance to experience such an adventure away from home for yourself?

Whichever category your childhood memories fall into, you now have the opportunity to head to The Wild Rumpus on Gambier Island, BC, as an adult, for a fun-filled summer camp experience.

The age requirement (19+), and option to indulge in adult beverages, for this adventure are less than typical; but The Wild Rumpus incorporates many classic “kids” camp activities like hiking, swimming, canoeing, arts and crafts into their itinerary.

The trip begins with a water taxi ride up Howe Sound, from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver. Campers are dropped off at a private beach on Gambier Island where they enjoy food, drinks, and entertainment. When they turn in for the night, visitors bunk up in rustic-style cabins.

An interview with The Wild Rumpus Founder, Clayton Lanoue

Jenn Gill: What inspired you to create an adult summer camp?

Clayton Lanoue: Well, adult summer camps are not our invention by any means. There are lots of other camps out there to choose from. We just wanted to give it our own personal twist. I believe I just liked the idea of getting a bunch strangers to interact and create memories together. I think a lot of us are missing that simple human connection in this digital era.

What are some of the most memorable moments from the first The Wild Rumpus camp, hosted in 2016?

Haha, I think each camper has a list of their own most memorable moments. As the host I just remember frantically running around all weekend. It really wasn’t until afterwards that I realized what a good time everyone had.

What should campers be getting excited to experience this summer?

Getting on a boat, being brought to a private camp on an island, spending the weekend going on adventures and playing games, putting on a costume and getting in touch with your inner wild side. I guess that’s what I would be excited for anyways.

What does the future look like for The Wild Rumpus beyond 2017? Will there be camps opening up in new locations?

We will have to wait and see. We are very fortunate to have so many people interested in camp right now, and we’re very thankful for that. We have looked into other locations, and that might still be an option, but I think the real dream is to create a spectacular [experience] that’s great enough to draw people from all over to our coast. We are after all, pretty lucky to live in such an amazing part of the world.
